Tabstrummer is a stand-alone programmable MIDI controller. You can program any of its 12 memory buttons with any guitar CHORD/TAB that can be played on a 12 fret guitar, plus all the 12 memory buttons can be programmed into any of the 300 memory SONG locations of TabStrummers internal memory. It has an MIDI out connection and an add on MIDI sound shield from Sparkfun Electronics with onboard audio out jack so you can plug in your headphones or connect it to your sound system or TV audio input. The strings are PCB traces that are touch sensitive, they are widely spaced on the top of the strum board so you can easily "pluck" each string.
Tab + Strummer = TabStrummer. Tab or guitar tablature refers to a system of writing guitar chords easily and visually. The guitar having 6 strings; EADGBe, a guitar tab is a 6 digit combination of numbers and letter X which corresponds to a muted string. Each digit corresponds to each fret of particular string on the guitar.
Ex. The following tab; X32010 corresponds to the C chord. Starting from left, the letter 'X' tells us that the top 'E' string will be muted which means that this string will not be heard, the following number 3 tells us that the string 'A' is played by holding the finger on the 3rd fret, the following number 2 tells us that the 'D' string is played by holding the finger on the 2nd fret, the following number 0 tells us the the 'G' string is played without pressing the string...
